Charmonia and beauty production measurements with J/ψ events at LHCb

We report on the possibilities of measuring charmonia and beauty production with the LHCb experiment. Using J/ψ reconstructed from µ + µ − pairs, both the prompt J/ψ and the b →J/ψ production cross-sections in p-p collisions at LHC energies will be determined in a pseudorapidity range of 2 to 5. Due to the very large statistics, this analysis will be possible very soon after the LHC start. Other charmonia related measurements will also be discussed, such as that of the J/ψ polarization at production or of the production of some of the new X, Y and Z states.

Statistical coalescence model of J/ψ production at the SPS and RHIC
A recently developed statistical coalescence model of the J/ψ production is presented. The NA50 data on the J/ψ suppression pattern and the transverse mass spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS are analyzed. The model predictions for the RHIC energies are formulated. The measurements of J/ψ in Au+Au collisions at RHIC are crucial for disentangling the different scenarios of charmonia formation.
